Lewis & Clark Law School presents

From the Corps of Discovery, to the Doctrine of Discovery, and Beyond: The Legacy of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in Indian Law

On May 5 and 6, 2004, Lewis and Clark Law School is hosting a symposium entitled "From the Corps of Discovery, to the Doctrine of Discovery, and Beyond: The Legacy of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in Indian Law." This program is the first of a series of three annual symposia that the law school is convening in conjunction with the overall Lewis and Clark College commemoration of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

This year's symposium will begin on the evening of Wednesday, May 5, 2004, with a lecture by Clay Jenkinson, Lewis & Clark College Humanities Scholar in Residence and an expert on Thomas Jefferson and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Jenkinson will examine Lewis and Clark's encounters with Native Americans during the journey. A reception will follow this evening lecture.

May 6th will have a full day of speakers and discussion on the evolution of Indian law doctrine, from the early days of the expanding United States to current times. Featured speakers include Stephen Dow Beckham, Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr., Professor of History at Lewis and Clark College; Michael C. Blumm, professor Lewis and Clark Law School; Robert J. Miller, associate professor, Lewis and Clark Law School and member of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma; Professor Judith V. Royster, professor, University of Tulsa School of Law; Rennard Strickland, Philip H. Knight Professor of Law, University of Oregon School of Law; Rebecca Tsosie, Lincoln Professor of Native American Law and Ethics, Arizona State University College of Law; Professor Gerald Torres, H. O. Head Centennial Professor in Real Property Law at the University of Texas School of Law..
